Silkeborg to Jels – day 1

Started out on my bike today and did around 75 miles. Most of the route was off paved roads and followed “Hærvejen” – an ancient north south road from the Bronze Age going through Jutland. The picture above is one of the rune stones along the way (at Bække). I was very lucky – no wind today which is very unusual. Oh – and I did get dumped on.

First part of the trip was through the forest following a bikeway on an abandoned railway.

It had rained earlier – never seen so many snails and slugs. My bike got all greased up. So many different colors.

Passing many grave sites (tumulus) from the stone age (~4000BC) in the farmscape …

Typical village church …

Passed through Jellinge and went to see the two famous rune stones placed by Harold Bluetooth and King Gorm the Old

Quick lunch on a bench. Met a French couple – who biked up from France and heading to Norway

Flowers everywhere….

Viking age stone ship in Bække. The ship is huge- about 45m long – loved between two burial mounds (tumulus) …

Endless mustard flower fields …
